In your first term of your course you will begin to explore mark making. This is to open yourself up creatively to new ideas, and to build confidence in your abilities. During this time you loose those walls that stop you from being creative because you are scared people won't like it.
In fashion and art there is always admiration and criticism, they quite often get given by the same hand so you need to free yourself from doubt and believe in your own creative choices.
So if you are starting a design course for the first time, I would suggest buying a sketch book, maybe A3 in size and be a complete freak in side. It will give you some kind of head start in your class and you would have started to learn about different media and products that create different marks.
