So you might be unaware of the problematic issues of working in the textile industry. I am going to give you the two main problems. Firstly, there is no work or very little in the industry so you need to be willing to relocate and secondly the money can be terrible.
I've worked has a textile designer for almost two years freelancing and it is extremely competitive and brutal. You work your back side off to make gorgeous designs and one or nothing will sell all season or if you are luck a few sales will come at once.
As a freelance designer you usually get 50% commission, so if you sell a digital print at Premire Vision in Paris, it will sell for about £250.00, so half of this is £125.00, which for 6 months of work for one season and you've only sold one isn't going to pay many bills.
When you start in the industry, you will be either unpaid full time as an intern or you will be on a bare minimum salary. This will range from minimum wage to £16,000 a year.
Though, this is if you find a job in textiles, most of the people from my graduate year have left the industry for work in office jobs. I believe only 4 out of about 34 have fashion related jobs.
Seriously, textiles is so difficult to succeed in, so make sure you are competitive, refine your drawing skills, draw daily and get competent at detail sketching. Learn to be an all rounder and do as many internships as you can in one year, no longer - don't waste your money forever working as a design slave. People should pay you for your hard work when you are experienced.
Good look design kids!
