*WARNING MIX DYE IN A WELL VENTILATED ROOM ONLY*
Procion MX is used for dying natural fibres, such as cotton and silk.
First you must weight your fabric on scales.
Decide on your depth of shade for example 0.5 which is the weakest and 4.0 being a full dark shade. The amount of procion dye required will be as followed:
% shade x weight measurement = procion mx required in (gms)
100
Fully dissolve the dye in hot water.
water required is calculated at a ratio of 20:1
weight measurement of the cloth x 20 = water required (mi)
fully submerge the cloth in the vat of dye for 20 minutes adding 3 portions of salt to the dye during the dying time.
required shade up to 0.5% = 30gm of salt per litre
0.5 - 2.0 % = 40gm of salt per litre
2.0 - 4.0% = 50gm of salt per litre
4.0 and above = 60gm of salt per litre
30 x dye liquor (water) = salt
1000
After the 20 minutes is up, lift out the fabric from the dye liquor and dissolve Sodium Carbonate into the liquid. This helps to fix the dye to the cloth.
required shade up to 0.5% = 3gm of sodium carbonate per litre of water
0.5 - 2.0% = 4gm of sodium carbonate per litre of water
2.0 - 4.0% = 7gm of sodium carbonate per liter of water
4.0% and above = 10gm sodium carbonate per litre of water
example 3 x dye liquor = sodium carbonate
1000
submerge the cloth again in the dye solution with the added sodium carbonate for another 40 minutes. During this time you must continue to move the fabric to avoid patches of uneven dying and un-dyed patches
Once the time is complete, you should wash the fabric thoroughly until water runs clear.
You finally have a beautiful piece of dyed fabric!
