pattern cutting - tutorial - peplum skirt

In this tutorial I am going to teach you how to create a peplum skirt and to remove darts without pivoting.

This tutorial is using a quarter scale block, but you can use full scale just keep an eye on your proportions.

Front Skirt

Back Skirt

Trace around the front skirt and draw in waist dart.

Create the peplum shape on the skirt you would like to create.  Look at your sketch or garment for an accurate shape.

Trace the back skirt also including the waist dart.

You can transfer all the pattern details at the end once you have finished pattern pieces.

Place the front peplum panel onto the back skirt face down.  This is so you can accurately match your side seams to create a smooth line in your garment.

If you refer back to the original drawing, we have no dart in the back of the skirt.  To create this look and remove excess fabric we take the dart measurement from the side seam as shown below.

Measure your dart width and length and take this away from your side seam not on the fold line.  cross out the dart and ensure a smooth line on your side seam.

Cut out your peplum panels ready for the next step.

Cut and fan your peplum in equal spaces.

I'm going to create a lot of gathers so I am using 2.5cms in my peplum

Once you have the correct gap measurements trace around your new skirt hem shape - the peplum.

These are now our finished skirt panels.   Ensure you have smooth lines on all of your edges, including the peplims
