Weights and measurements

These are things you need to know if you plan to pursue a career in textiles. Measurements when dying are crucial to achieving the right colour, but you must also know what you are adding to the mixture so you can repeat later.
Imagine you designed and produced a scarf, which you hand dyed with acid dye (wool or silk) or with procion MX (cotton or silk) and you sold to a buyer 500. You would need to create 500 dyed to match scarves so you understand why it is most important to know your measurements.

Keep a note of every print whilst making it, even the order of your processes is extremely important!

The Metric System

0.001 = milli - for example, milligrams and millimetre
0.01 = centi  - for example, centimetre
0.1 = Deci
1.0
10 = Deca
100  = Hecto = hectogram, hectolitre or hectare
1000 =  Kilo - for example, Kilogram or kilometre
1000000 =  mega

Linear Measurement
Metric (metre 'm')

1 Millimetre mm =  0.0394 inches
10 millimtres = 1cm = 1 centimetre
10 centimetres = 1 decimetre

10 decimetres
100 centimetres      = all equal 1 metre
1000millimetres

Imperial

12inches = 1 foot (ft)
3 feet = 1 yard

Weight

10 milligrams = 1 centigram
10 centigrams = 1 decigram

10 decigrams
100 centigrams  = all equal to 1 kilogram (kg)
1000 milligrams
